Shame is not a tool for social justice. Shame backfires every single time. Shame created polarization and extremism. What works? Humility. Curiosity. Empathy. Remembering that nothing human is foreign to us.
For me, I could not face myself in a mirror if I didn’t take a strong stand for democracy. The world is at a perilous tipping point. Democracy can continue to allow us to invest in saving the planet or we can allow Big Oil to own our government with a small $1 billion “investment” and continue to pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink. For me this is not difficult or complicated because I have been a values-based person since age 5. I know what my values are: authenticity, vulnerability, transparency, and leaving the world or a situation better than I found it.
For me, its often a question of where my political and social values live. I’ve decided that for now, it’s not at work but in how I vote, direct my spending, where I live, pay taxes etc. there will be people I disagree with in any workplace. I think it can be helpful when those disagreements are personal v about the work itself (and therefore don’t need to be remediated in the workplace)
Great observations, Robert. The Bible is a great example of that truth; ideas that have had their value increasing as they are validated by time.

Yes, time to take bold stands for truth.
