Years ago, someone asked me for my perspective on a sales and marketing hire that they planned to make. I told them, “you are already in trouble.”

The person was shocked and wanted to know why I was concerned. My answer was simple: “because I’m sure sales and marketing aren’t on the same page about what success looks like for this role.”

When a new hire fails to meet expectations, in many cases the company is to blame, not the hire. Often, the hiring manager or team hasn’t done the hard work to define what they expect from the new hire to do in order to consider them successful. They certainly haven’t articulated those expectations clearly enough that everyone’s on the same page.

There’s actually a simple way to do this that checks several important boxes at once:

  • It ensures everyone is aligned before the job is even posted.

  • It creates a clear filter for evaluating candidates and helps them opt in or out with eyes wide open.

  • It lays the foundation for future performance evaluations.

Here’s how it works.
