About three months ago, I attended an event called Mastermind Talks (MMT), an annual event featuring incredible speakers and a great community. While the content was excellent as always, the most powerful takeaway for me from the event may have been a simple exercise we did.

Each of us received a one pager with some prompts and space to write to ourselves 90 days in the future. The prompts were simple, but powerful:

  • For the next 90 days, what's the main thing I need to keep in focus?

  • If we were to meet 90 days from today, what are we celebrating?

  • In order to achieve this, what do I need to solve or overcome?

  • If I could wave a magic wand and connect with someone who could help me navigate what person is that and what skills do they have?

We wrote down our responses, sealed the cards in envelopes, wrote our names on them, and handed them back to the organizers. Last week, 90 days later, my card showed up in the mail.

I didn’t think much of the exercise in the moment. But as I read my note last week, I realized that I had either completed or made significant progress toward some ambitious targets in that span. Truthfully, I had forgotten about the note; yet, clearly having that clarity of focus embedded in my subconscious impacted my actions.

It was a small, powerful reminder: 90 days is the perfect window to make real progress toward our most important goals with planning and focus. This is true for both individuals and organizations.

We Overestimate the Day and Underestimate the Quarter

Most of us dramatically overestimate what we can get done in a single day. We build long to-do lists and we get frustrated when we inevitably fall short.
