In this chapter, we’ll discuss what happens when it’s time to commence a transition. At this point, you’ve set the right culture, had the engagement conversations, gotten to the root of the problem, and decided that the best outcome is for the employee to start looking for a new role elsewhere. Reaching this point isn’t easy, but once both parties are committed, it often brings relief that things are moving in a more positive direction.

Mechanically, there are two types of transition processes—those initiated by the employee (a decision to quit) and those initiated by the employer (a decision to let someone go). While these ultimately yield the same outcome, each variation has its own sequence of events and best practices.
